In 1307, Austrian forces oppress the people of Switzerland. William Tell swore never to commit violence after his time in the Crusades but joins a rebellion to stop the bloodshed.
Austrian Governor Gessler forces Tell to shoot an apple on his son Walter’s head, but the gifted archer leaves him unscathed. Gessler takes Tell and Princess Bertha of Habsburg captive but the pair soon escape.
Both Tell’s attempt to assassinate Gessler and the princess’s pleas to the king to end the war are unsuccessful.
Bertha stabs the king and his son to death as Tell returns home to find his town ransacked and his beloved wife Suna dying.
An emboldened Tell leads a rebellion on Altdorf, where Gessler’s hostages include Walter. However, when news of the King’s death reaches the troops, Gessler is abandoned and Tell shoots him dead.
Despite Austria’s defeat, its new Queen Agnes vows vengeance.
